Last weekend, I participated in the OOTY Ultra Running Event, which was specifically designed to challenge its participants and create an “ultramalaivasi” (meaning “one of a mountain origin” in Tamil). And it did just that.

The scenic route of the run took us through the beautiful blue mountains of the Nilgiris, and it was both comforting and terrifying. It was unpredictable, and I didn’t know what to expect, but I was determined to push myself to the limit. And boy, did I push myself!

The event was well-planned, with everything thought of and organized to perfection. From the fuel stations to police protection, smart escorts on bikes, patrol jeeps, cars, doctors, ambulances, the best physiotherapist, and crowd support, everything was taken care of. But the best part was running through the tea estates, valleys, and colorful villages, taking in the breathtaking views and feeling the rush of adrenaline.

The elevation gain of 1947 meters and the loss of 1779 meters were challenging, to say the least. It tested every runner’s endurance and lung capacity. But I persevered, knowing that no pain, no gain. And now, I have a medal with my name engraved on it to show for it.

But it wasn’t just about the medal. It was about the experience, the challenge, and the support. My life partner finished her first 15 km run on this tough terrain, and I couldn’t be prouder. I also want to thank my family, friends, and well-wishers for their continued support.

The director, Coach Kay, and the team deserve a big round of applause for bringing this amazing event to the Queen of hills. Despite the ongoing pandemic and the rest of India burning, Ooty proved to be the most suitable destination for this running event.

And then there were the inspiring tidbits that added to the excitement. One woman challenged herself to run alongside six other men in the 90 km run, and a couple in their late 80s also participated. It just goes to show that age is just a number, and anything is possible if you set your mind to it.

All in all, it was a great weekend, and I’m happy to have overcome yet another challenge. Mountain running is no easy feat, but we gave it our all. The beauty of the Nilgiris is still etched in my mind, and the satisfaction of completing it is ingrained in my heart.

I feel blessed to have been a part of this wonderful event, and I’m already setting my sights on OOTY Ultra 2023, with a forecast of 90 km. I know it’s going to be tough, but I’m ready to run until it hurts, so next time it will hurt less. Because that’s what it’s all about – pushing yourself to the limit and realizing that you’re capable of achieving so much more than you ever thought possible.
